Kenya’s construction industry is booming. New buildings are going up everywhere. Offices, hospitals, apartments and hotels. But here’s the uncomfortable truth that most people in the industry know and very few say out loud: a lot of those buildings don’t actually work the way they should.
Not because the architects weren’t talented. Not because the contractors cut corners. But because the engineering systems inside, the plumbing, the electrical, the air conditioning, were often treated as an afterthought. Designed too late. Coordinated too loosely. Installed without anyone seriously asking: will this still perform well in ten years?
The result is buildings that cost a fortune to run, frustrate the people inside them and quietly drain their owners’ budgets month after month.
That’s the problem we were founded to solve.

Why We’re Called IKIGAI
In Japanese, IKIGAI means your reason for being. The sweet spot where what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be valued for all meet at once.
For us, that sweet spot is MEP engineering in East Africa. Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) systems are the invisible infrastructure that determines whether your building is a joy to occupy or a daily headache.
In 2020, our founders, Benson Njoroge, a Mechanical Engineer from the University of Nairobi and Martha Nguru, an Electrical Engineer from JKUAT, decided to build a consultancy around one simple idea: that every building in East Africa deserves to be engineered properly,

We’ve delivered MEP solutions for hospitals like Metropolitan Hospital and Nairobi South Hospital, residential towers, student housing, hospitality developments and industrial projects, including a 100MW Solar PV system for BAT’s industrial operations.
